PDF Conversions: Facts and Fictions

Acrobat pdf files come in four different kinds. Of these four flavors, three(3) are readable by the VIEWER. It is entirely up to the customer to determine which of these flavors satisfies his/her needs(We'll be glad to help answer any questions you may have on this issue). The file size, the "look and feel", and production costs will be determined by the customer's choice.

Below are the 4 kinds of PDF files:

Normal

The "Normal" kind allows for searchable text. No text editing of any kind is allowed. The image and the text form a single unit. (Very rarely used format)

Image Only

Allows an image reproduction of the exact page. This an exact image of the scanned page. No searchs are allowed in this flavor.

Image & Hidden Text (Self-contained PDF)

By far the most flexible and easiest flavor to work with. We have converted 1000's of technical manuals with drawings using this flavor of pdf to allow for searchable text and viewing of the drawings. Converted text in this flaor is not viewable but the image and original scan can be seen by anyone viewing. This is akin to doing a search in a text document where a presence of a black shadow on highlighted word being searched is observed. This is exactly what appears in a pdf file as well. The only difference is that the scanned image is either in front or viewable.

Adobe Flavor

The fourth flavor is an adobe proprietary file format. This format is a "half-way" pdf file because it can allows editings of hidden text. If your goal is to have 100% accuracy, then you need the "raw file" to see and edit the hidden text prior to changing it to a pdf format.
